There are many joyful books, but few books about joy - about joy as an almost basic necessity of life, essential for us to experience feelings of harmony and happiness. In his black-and-white images, photographer Milan Pitlach has captured those fleeting moments when we detach ourselves from worries and break free from everyday life, moments when we find ourselves at the very epicenter of the meaning of being. Joy is not an artificial construct but an intense feeling accessible to each and every one of us. It's just that the complexities of the world often cause us to forget about it - just as we forget that it is precisely these moments of grace that form an antithesis to the finality of existence and the givenness of death shared by us all. Milan Pitlach's images of people at moments of spontaneous joy remind us of the things that, however intangible, are more important in a person's life than all the belongings in the world.
